While the free version should work for most users, for $6 per month Feedly Pro provides more feed sources, allowing you to share via social networks, copy content to note-taking apps, and more. So you choose the category that interests you and then select the sources that offer RSS feeds. Not because it was costing them anything, but rather to push yet another social networking failure to compete with Facebook. It offers several popular RSS feeds categorized by topics – Technology, Startup, Business, Sports, Health, and more. Then one day, Google decided to shut it down. So everyone pretty much said, "Hey, Google's got this" and it made sense since Google could easily merge usage data (favorited or shared articles) with their Search rankings to improve results for everyone (which also gave incentive to content providers to utilize/promote Google Reader). They were crushed when Google entered the market. What pisses many of us off is that prior to Google Reader, there were others trying to achieve the same thing. Today we have many different hubs, and none with the functionality that made Google Reader so valuable even if you weren't using their website to read your feeds. When Google Reader shut down, many of these apps just stopped working since Google Reader was the source of feed management for them. Many RSS apps allowed either the importing of Google Reader feeds, or the syncing of them. Another very popular function was syncing RSS feeds. Many other sites were doing the exact same thing using Google Reader.Īnd this is just one example of what could easily be done with the hub. So we stopped promoting bloggers as doing this manually was way too resource intensive. When Google Reader shut down, there was no real substitute for this. This was done by using the Google Reader hub, although I used any number of 3rd party apps to actually select a post to promote through our site. As part of "participating in the community" we would refer to and link out to various blogs that had content related to our subjects. I run a fairly large site that features audio/video/PDFs that we produce or receive from clients for distribution. You either liked it or not, but it wasn't anything special.Īs 2 an RSS hub, it was used by a lot of other apps, services and websites. You might miss it and not even realize it.Īs 1 a web based RSS reader, it was what it was. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
